Gita Shroff has emerged as a prominent figure in the realm of social activism, particularly in the southern region of Gujarat, India, where her name has become synonymous with relentless dedication and impactful initiatives. Her journey, which began after she completed her Graduation and the first year of LL.B from Veer Narmad South Gujarat University, two decades into her marriage, is marked by an unwavering commitment to societal betterment and women’s rights.
For over three decades, beginning in 1990, Gita has been an influential volunteer, social initiator, and a vigilant whistleblower. Her leadership as the founding member and President of the A.Ni.S. (Apmrutyu Nivaran Sahay) foundation is notable for its extensive social outreach and impactful projects. Gita Shroff’s tenure as a Judge Panel Member of the Surat Consumer Court for a decade, her advisory roles at the Children University Gandhinagar, the Lajpore Jail Committee, and the Vanita Vishram, along with her active participation in the Sarvajanik Society, SVNIT, Income Tax Office, and the District Court Surat’s Women Cell, exemplify her multifaceted involvement in societal reforms.
As the Chief Mentor of the Counselling Team of the Family Court & District Court and a member of the One Stop Sakhi Centre, Surat, Gita has been instrumental in driving significant change. Her social work experience spans three decades, during which she has spearheaded numerous projects with A.Ni.S. Noteworthy among these are the “SAAR (Surat Acts Against Rape)” initiative and the production of two poignant documentaries, “Masumiyat Apna Hathma” and “Beti Apki Hamari”. Various initiatives by her like “With You” campaign, “Abhiyaan Ashwatthama,” and the extensive awareness and implementation work for the PC&PNDT Act, including filing a PIL in the Gujarat High Court, are testaments to her proactive approach towards social justice.
Gita Shroff even conducted the first ‘Vacation Camp for Children’ in Surat where Sanskaar Training was imparted to kids; under the banner of ‘Baudhik Vikas Sankul’. Her affiliation with Akhil Hind Mahila Parishad Bruhad Surat and the Giants Group of Surat Chaupatty, her trusteeship in the Traffic Education Trust in collaboration with Surat City Police since 2005, and her organization of critical discussion forums, particularly the 2006 event on the documentary ‘Behind the Closed Door’, have significantly contributed to raising awareness against domestic violence. The 2009 launch of the self-defense program for women, ‘Josh bhi hai, Hosh bhi hai’, after the Surat gang-rape case, has empowered and inspired thousands of girls to stand against harassment and violence.
Her role in the State Supervisory Board of Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) and Surrogacy of the government of Gujarat further amplifies her influence in critical areas of women’s health and rights. Her ongoing initiative, the ‘Beti Santulan Yatra’, initiated in 2021, aims to address and rectify the gender imbalance at birth across the country. This extensive body of work, marked by dedication, courage, and a vision for societal transformation, underscores Gita Shroff’s unparalleled contribution to social work and women’s empowerment in India.
She has now been designated as a Member of UCC (Uniform Civil Code) Committee by Government of Gujarat.
In 2024, She became a Member of Gujarat State Supervisory Board of ART & Surrogacy Act 2021.
In 2025, She has now been designated as a Member of UCC (Uniform Civil Code) Committee by Government of Gujarat.
